Drawing inspiration from touring live through some of Australia’s best known venues and some favourite live covers by artists as diverse (in genre and time) as The Replacements, Rory Gallagher and The Rev Gary Davis – Leadfinger have put together a little EP of songs that celebrates and revels in the grittiness of what it’s like playing in a band.
I Belong to the Band takes the listener into the world of Leadfinger where the song and delivery are every bit as important as the next gig, truck stop or the next beer. From the belting 70’s power of opening original What Did You See in Me? with it’s KISS-like hooks and unerring Stones like riffage through a cracking cover of The Replacements Can’t Hardly Wait and the closing delta blues of title track I Belong to the Band – a re-working of a Rev Gary Davis classic from the last century… this is hand hewn rock’n’roll complete with ‘ashtray floors, dirty clothes and filthy jokes’ played by a bunch of guys who know what can be done with a riff, a guitar and the right beat.
Two new originals – December Runaway and Leadfinger Theme (a riff that harks back to the MC5’s finest moments) break up the high energy with an epic cover of Rory Gallagher’s glorious homage to the circus life – Tattoo’d Lady rounding out the best value 6 pack ever bought outside of a Dan Murphy’s. I Belong to the Band is a great collection of songs about playing in a rock’n’roll band and tells it with a wink and a nod. Before the end of the first track you’ll be turning up the volume and punching your fist in celebration as you dream of hitting that long highway.
I Belong to the Band by Leadfinger is out on December 1st 2011 through Impedance Records and will be available for download via www.leadfinger.com.au and your favourite online store. A limited edition of 100 numbered and signed CD copies will be available at gigs or directly from the band.
